Maia worksurface installation instructions.

This page contains all the information a fitter will need to complete a successful Maia installation. Click on the links below to access and view the nine Maia installation videos, produced by Sylmar, the manufacturer, covering everything from measuring and cutting to joining, edging and fitting undermounted sinks, plus the Maia brochure and care and maintenance downloads.

1/ Maia Worksurface Installation Video - Introduction

  • Maia is modular range of solid surface worktops and breakfast bars which makes fitting a straightforward process.  You can achieve seamless, virtually inconspicuous joints and even undermounted sinks. All of these are easy to prepare and cut on site so there is no templating. This video shows how to install and cut worktops and breakfast bars, join, finish, re-edge, and how to install undermounted sink modules and make cut-outs for hobs. Also covered is a video showing how to remove any minor scratches, should they occur. Dust masks and eye protection are highly recommended when cutting and sanding Maia. Disposable gloves are also recommended when handling the Maia two part adhesives.

2/ Maia Worksurface Installation Video - Measure and Cut

  • With an “L” shaped kitchen and with the Maia worktops being already factory edged on the front and both ends, when the worktop needs to be cut to length you will retain the factory edge so there is no need to re-edge the worktop. The cut end will once it has been scribed to the shape of the wall will need to be sealed to prevent the ingress of moisture from the atmosphere.

3/ Maia Worksurface Installation Video - Cutting your joint

  • The final finish of any worktop joint depends upon the quality of the cut. Make sure the router bit is sharp and the router jig is firmly clamped into place. Three or four passes with the router will usually be enough. If you need to cut a worktop roughly to length, use either a jigsaw or a circular saw. Finish the cut by trimming exactly to length with a router. The Masons Mitre joint should be cut using a worktop jointing jig. The male and female parts of the joint are cut, then the three bolt holes are cut into the underside of the worktops. These are for the worktop jointing bolts that secure the worktop together. Don’t forget to use the loose tongues which sit just under the 3mm to surface of the worktop. Use a Titman groover or a biscuit  groover to make the grooves for the loose tongues. Always dry fit the worktops to test your joint before you do the final gluing.

4/ Maia Worksurface Installation Video - Gluing and finishing the joint

  • Once the two part epoxy adhesive is mixed together, apply to one side of the joint and insert the loose tongues. Then apply adhesive to the other side of the joint and bring both faces of the joint together. Gradually sand down the excess glue using the three grades of abrasive paper. Follow the video instructions for the final gluing stage and sanding stage.

5/ Maia Worksurface Installation Video - Applying edging strips

  • When re-edging a Maia worktop, cut the worktop roughly to length using a jigsaw or circular saw, then trim exactly to the length required using a router. Isopropyl alcohol wipes are used to clean the back (the sanded side) of the edging strip and the cut edge of the worktop. When applying edging strips, three way adjustable clamps can be used. These are not essential but they make the job easier. When the adhesive has set, sand down in stages as described before.

6/ Maia Worksurface Installation Video - Stainless Steel Sink module installation

  • The sink module is supplied with cut-outs are supplied ready-prepared and are supplied with all fittings apart from the taps. Remove the protective film from the bowls and make sure that the edges of the bowls are clean and free from any debris. The sink screws are supplied already fitted to the underside of the worktop and should be retained for use later. Apply a bead of the silicon supplied to the edge of the sink. Position the sink central to the sink aperture. Tighten up sink clips until a small amount of silicon oozes out from beneath the join. Maia white acrylic (as opposed to stainless steel) sink modules are supplied factory fitted and blended in with the Maia worktop.

7/ Maia Worksurface Installation Video - Cutting out for sink or hob

  • Preparing cut-outs in Maia for hobs or sinks is a simple process. Ideally make a jig from MDF, make the cuts with a router, two or three cutting passes will be necessary, then a slight radius is applied to the top edge of the cut-out. Dust should be removed between passes, but a router with dust extraction facility is preferable. A 10mm hole should be drilled at each corner of the cut out i.e. square corner cut-outs are to be avoided. Heat reflective tape is then applied to the cut-out with an overlap onto the top face.

8/ Maia Worksurface Installation Video - Fitting Maia Accessories

  • This short video explains how to fit splashbacks, upstands, kickboards (plinths) and end panels. The Maia splashbacks and upstands are made from 10mm thick solid Maia material so they can be joined together easily if they need to be extened and the joins will be excellent.

9/ Maia Worksurface Installation Video - Care and Maintenance

  • This video has many useful tips explaining how easy it is to keep your Maia worktops in perfect condition.
