How long will my wooden worktops last?

Your wooden worktops will last a couple of decades or longer as long as you follow these points:-

Always use a chopping board when cutting bread or vegetables.

Always use a trivet or chopping board to protect the worktop when removing anything hot from the oven. Even leaving a hot item for less than a minute can cause damage. Minor damage can be sanded out but heavier damage cannot.

Keep your wooden worktop well oiled.

When fitting a new wooden worktop, fit self adhesive aluminium heat sheets to the underside where the worktop is over a tumble drier, washing machine or dishwasher.

Oiling can be a bit tedious if you have other things to do but oiling is a worthwhile investment of time and effort. Oiling them regularly means that any water spilled on the surface can easily and quickly be wiped off without leaving any marks. If marks remain after the worktop has been dried then this is because the worktop hasn't been oiled enough. Wooden worktops look great if you are prepared to put the time and effort in. If you don't have time to maintain them then perhaps wooden worktops are not for you. There are many wood effect laminate worktops around now which are very realistic.
