Kitchen Splashbacks or Kitchen Upstands

A few weeks ago one of our customers ordered some laminate worktops from us. Our customer telephoned back the following day asked us to add a couple of laminate splashbacks to the order. They were surprised to receive two huge splashbacks when they was expecting to receive two small upstands about 100mm high. Laminate upstands are usually 3 metres long by 100mm high by around 18mm to 20mm thick. They sit on the back of the worktop and are fitted to the wall, usually with Gripfill or No-Nails or similar products. The joint between the upstand and worktop or between the splashback and worktop is sealed using clear silicon sealant which is all that is necessary to waterproof the joint against moisture and worktop spillages. They are designed to cover any gap between worktop and walls which may occur when walls are very uneven.

Laminate splashbacks, on the other hand, are typically 3 metres x 600mm  or 1200mm x 1500mm or occasionally 4 metres x 650mm. Splashbacks are often used in place of tiles; they are cheaper, quicker and easier to fit than ceramic tiles.
